HODL & Market Narratives

Terminology, narratives, and how to separate story from execution.

Volume bevestigt trends, onthult zwakte en signaleert keerpunten.

The Language of Markets

Every market develops its own slang. Crypto has "HODL," "WAGMI," "diamond hands." Traditional finance has "buy the dip," "don't fight the Fed," "sell in May." These phrases are cultural shorthand - but they are not strategies.

Understanding the vocabulary helps you follow conversations. But confusing a meme with a plan is how people lose money.

What Is a Narrative?

A narrative is a story the market tells itself to justify price movement. Narratives are powerful because they coordinate behavior - when enough people believe a story, they act on it, and price moves accordingly.

Examples of narratives:

  • "Bitcoin is digital gold" - drives buying during inflation fears.
  • "AI will change everything" - drives tech stock rallies.
  • "The Fed will pivot" - drives risk-on behavior.
  • "This project will be the next Ethereum" - drives altcoin speculation.

The Narrative Trap

The danger of narratives is that they feel like analysis but are actually stories. Stories can change overnight:

  • A narrative that drove price up for months can reverse in a single news cycle.
  • By the time a narrative is widely known, it's often already priced in.
  • Narratives create emotional attachment - you start "believing" instead of "analyzing."
Key question: For any narrative you hold, ask: "What evidence would make me change my mind?" If you can't answer that, you're not analyzing - you're believing.

Separating Story from Execution

Professional traders often have opinions about narratives, but they separate those opinions from their execution rules:

  • Opinion: "I think AI stocks will continue to rally."
  • Execution: "I will buy NVDA if it pulls back to the 50-day MA with a stop at $X."

The opinion provides direction. The execution rule provides discipline. Without the execution rule, the opinion is just hope.

Narrative Audit

List 3 narratives you've heard recently (from social media, news, friends). For each one:

  • What is the story?
  • What evidence supports it?
  • What evidence would disprove it?
  • Is it already priced in?

Key Takeaways

  • Market slang is cultural shorthand, not a trading strategy.
  • Narratives coordinate behavior and move price - but they change fast.
  • If you can't define what would change your mind, you're believing, not analyzing.
  • Separate your market opinion from your execution rules.
  • Conviction without a plan is just stubbornness.

  • Stijgende prijs + stijgend volume = sterke opwaartse trend. Kopers zijn agressief.
  • Stijgende prijs + dalend volume = zwakke rally. Minder overtuiging, mogelijke uitputting.
  • Dalende prijs + stijgend volume = sterke verkoopdruk. Verkopers domineren.
  • Dalende prijs + dalend volume = zwakke sell-off. Verkopers verliezen momentum.

Volumepieken

Plotselinge pieken in volume signaleren vaak keerpunten of belangrijke gebeurtenissen:

  • Climax-volume bij een top kan capitulatie van kopers signaleren.
  • Climax-volume bij een bodem kan capitulatie van verkopers signaleren.
  • Volumepieken rond steun/weerstand valideren de betekenis van dat niveau.

Belangrijkste punten

  • Volume meet activiteit, niet richting.
  • Prijs + volume samen vertellen het volledige verhaal.
  • Hoog volume bevestigt; laag volume waarschuwt.
  • Volumepieken markeren vaak keerpunten.
